Quiting Facebook
Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 9:20PM I am really struggling with whether or not I should keep my Facebook account open given the seriousness of the problems that Facebook seems to be having with privacy and security issues.
Top Ten Reasons You Should Quit Facebook
I really like having one place to see updates from everybody and pictures of family and friends, but I am beginning to think that it is not a fair trade off for the data that Facebook is selling and the arbitrary way in which Facebook is treating its users. I would encourage all of you to take a moment and review the privacy setting and be sure that you are comfortable with a company that has no real regard for you or your personal data being the gate keepers of that data.
I think that I will end up putting my account on hold until I can better understand the road map that Facebook seems to be traveling and if it is a path that I want to participate in.
So the Facebook account is closed, what really bothers me is that they wont delete the data right there but give you 14 days to change your mind or accidentally log back into the service. Last time I checked I was fully capable of making decision and understanding the consequences, what reason does Facebook have to keep my data around? Maybe they want to archive it for sale later.
Here is a good tip before you delete your account go into the profile and enter 1s and 0s into the text boxes that way your data will be overwritten and they cant sell it later.
Great post by Jason Calacanis on why we should quit Facebook and the questionable ethics of Mark Zuckerberg.
Over the past month, Mark Zuckerberg, the hottest new card player in town, has overplayed his hand. Facebook is officially “out,” as in uncool, amongst partners, parents and pundits all coming to the realization that Zuckerberg and his company are–simply put–not trustworthy.
Tonight leading video podcaster Leo Laporte announced that he’s closed his Facebook account and made a financial donation in support of Diaspora, a project working to create an alternative social network outside of Facebook’s control.

This is my plan. I am going to remove all personal info from my Facebook page and design my own personal blog site which will post to my Facebook wall via RSS.
That way Facebook doesn't own my personal info and people can still see what's going on with me... they'll just have to click through to my website to view my posts, pictures, and videos.
I think that will work.
I like that idea, but how long do you think that it will be before Facebook will either disable the ability to do that or will sue you for using an automated posting bot?

I have a hard time believing that Facebook will allow the users that leave or cripple their accounts to have much access to them for long. Look what they do if you don't allow linking to pages for your likes, work, education and profile you end up with this blank profile page.
You could lie about all of your information and pollute the data pool but that again defeats the reason for having a Facebook account in the first place.
